Bernard is a high-quality, handcrafted adventure that pushes the boundaries of what a Ren’Py visual novel can offer, bringing it closer to a classic point-and-click adventure than to a linear “choose your own destiny” novel.
Set in the summer of 1999, the story lets us experience post-Olympic Barcelona through the eyes of Bernard, a poor 23-year-old schmuck (although he looks more like a hard-lived 40-year-old), born in the United States. After a childhood and youth plagued by social and romantic failures, he decided to do what any good protagonist would do: run away.
With a single suitcase packed with geeky junk, emotional baggage, and a needy teddy bear with more dust mites than strands of yarn, Bernard embarked on a cowardly adventure that led him to settle in a dump in downtown Barcelona, where he has been living off an inheritance left to him by a distant aunt he barely knew.
And just as he begins the treatment, which is supposed to last an entire month, Murphy’s Law decides that this is the perfect time for two friends from the United States—whom he hasn’t seen in five years, ever since he embarrassed himself on a Ferris wheel—to show up unexpectedly at his doorstep and spend the entire summer with him.
That’s basically the story. All in 30 days.
